Sign Language according to Josie

There are many different classifications of sign language throughout the world. Here in the United States, American Sign Language is most commonly used. But here at our house, we have an adapted version of that known as Josie Sign Language.

Josie loves to sign but she isn't exactly a "by the book" kind of gal. In fact, if she doesn't know a sign, she just creates her own.

Here's a graphic of the actual signs...

...and here's Josie Sign Language:
(Grandma Chris, this one's for you!)

I rue the day that she encounters an individual with a hearing impairment and attempts to communicate with them; I don't even want to know what the literal translation of that last one is...

On the next episode of Confessions of the Chromosomally Enhanced, Aunt Leanne stops by for a visit.  You won't want to miss it!

  1. Teeheee... I TOTALLY understand what you're saying. We have lots of signs that are... um... Modified?, but if you look close, you can find the commonalities to the REAL one.

Then we have the ones that she has handcrafted on her own. Most of the time those make a little sense. Things like prunes are "raisin balls", for instance. Once you figure out what she's getting at, everyone's all on the same page and life is good.

And then there are the handful that you have NO IDEA what she's trying to say, WHERE she got it, or WHY she thought it was a good idea. Piper has a lot that she's made up on her own that I'd LOVE to hear the explanation as to WHY. We have two on our list right now that I'm clueless about. It's driving me NUTS. We had another that we've been stumped on for WEEKS. Found out the other day that it's DINOSAUR. Dinosaur. Because THAT'S a word that I would have expected... CRIPES.

  2. lol Love her! Most kids I know use their own version of sign :) Addy made up a sign for Sesame Street, I have no clue where it came from, I'll have to video it :) Hugs to you guys, I've been missing Aunt Leanne!

  4. I love this!! Some of Claire's signs are modified too. :0 And some just all look the same...like ball, more and shoes. You have use a whole lot of context on those...

And then there are the times she just starts signing random things, like she hopes something will be the word she is looking for.

Claire has some too, like Piper, where I just have NO IDEA what she is saying. Fun times!

  6. LOVE it! I learned at my first ASL class that the sign for "nice to meet you" is VERY similar to the sign for "nice to sleep with you" (and I'm not talking napping....)

So of course I end up signing with this guy in a bar... and at the end of the conversation... well, I'm not entirely sure what I said, but it was definitely one of the two!

  7. I love Josie's versions! Kayleigh is the same way. She's got her own versions of signs and gets so mad when we don't understand her. She shakes her finger at us and starts gibbering away. At one point she tried to put Daddy in time out when he didn't understand her sign for juice.
